HOW TO RATE A BOWLING BALL
If you visit a sporting goods store or bowling shop, you are likely to come across a large number of different types and sizes of bowling balls. Bowling balls are best purchased in person to allow you to test out the feel of the ball and your comfort level while using it. Once you have rated different bowling balls and made your buying selection, bring your bowling ball to a local alley to inquire about professional finger drilling. Pro drilling allows you to customize where you put the holes along with the correct sizes for your fingers, according to Dick's Sporting Goods.
Step 1
Rate your skill level. The type of bowling ball you select should be based on how skilled of a player you are. Polyester and plastic balls are more appropriate for beginners, while urethane and resin are used more by skilled and pro bowlers.
Step 2
Put your fingers in the holes of each ball. If you plan to forgo pro drilling, you need to test out each bowling ball by sticking your fingers inside the holes. You should have a comfortable and firm grip on the bowling ball. The Special Olympics website recommends that you swing the ball at arm's length to ensure that you can fully extend all fingers on your hand.
Step 3
Choose a ball with a comfortable weight. Dick's Sporting Goods states that women typically have a 10- to 12-lb. ball while men use balls that weigh 15 to 16 lbs. Buy the heaviest ball you can comfortably hold, since more weight helps you knock down pins. However, don't buy too heavy of a ball since this can throw off your balance.
Step 4
Find out if the ball has any type of special finish. Many urethane bowling balls are sold with a sanded finish. If you are bowling on a well-oiled lane, the sanded finish can aid in hooking the ball.
